If, as you say, the basis for man’s rights is derived from his capacity to reason, what happens if scientists discover that some species of animals has the capacity to reason at some level? Would there then be a valid justification—or even an obligation to—extend to them the basic human rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?
